Project Rationale:
I chose to create a web site that teaches personal finance for a number of reasons. First, I believe that creating a web site using weebly would allow me to master using one of the most practical tools that can be used as a teacher. I believe that more and more information is going to be posted online in the k-12 education area. I thought that learning to use weebly would allow me to master a skill that can translate to all of the high school classes that I teach. I discovered many tools that weebly has specifically for educators.
The second major reason for choosing for the project is the content that would be taught. I believe that personal finance is an extremely important yet overlooked part of k-12 curriculum across the nation. With the recent economic downturn in our country many adults are rating their own level of personal finance knowledge as inadequate. It is a topic that I care deeply about and have a strong knowledge of the content. It was perfect for this project because even though it is a topic I am passionate about, it is something I have never taught before.
The third reason I chose this project because it gave me the opportunity to be involved of all steps of designing the unit on personal finance. I enjoyed looking at several different topics related to personal finance, and deciding which 4 were the most important. I enjoyed creating content and searching for other content on these topics. I also enjoyed creating the assessments and rubrics for the lessons. This allowed me to focus on exactly what was important to teach. I tried to create a lesson from beginning to end that would give all users some valuable and practical information.
Student reflection:
I would like to take this section to not only reflect on this project, but to reflect on what I have learned over the past few years while studying instructional technology at WayneState. Although I was somewhat reluctant at first, I am glad that I chose the field of Instructional Technology. I don’t think that there is any other program that would have helped me more as a teacher than the instructional technology program. This program allowed me to see how much technology really does impact teaching. I received my undergraduate degree just 5 years ago, and considered myself ahead of the curve when it comes to using technology in the classroom. This program showed me that there is so much more technology out there, and that it is always changing. It is extremely important to continue to stay up with trends in technology. Overall I feel like that program gave me the tools I needed to become a leader and pioneer at the school where I teach in using technology.
